Economic Fraud Resulting from Fish Mislabeling

Aside from the numerous health risks that are associated with mislabeled fish, regulators can protect consumers from being victims of economic fraud. Economic fraud occurs when a lower-priced fish is labeled as a higher priced fish in order to sell the lower-priced fish for a higher price. A consumer, believing they are purchasing a higher priced fish, can be taken advantage of by a retailer or someone else in the supply chain that mislabeled the filet. This type of fraud is, essentially, no different than stealing money directly from the consumer. Thus, without the protection of regulators, the consumer is at the mercy of unscrupulous suppliers.
